Dr Atiar Rahman

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR (AM-NPR)

Md. Atiar Rahman Ph.D. is working as a professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of Chittagong while he has an adjunct position of an international professor in the School of Allied Health Sciences, Walailak University, Thailand. He was a former chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of Chittagong (BMBCU).  Dr. Rahman is the principal investigator of the Laboratory of Alternative Medicine and Natural Product Research of BMBCU. He has completed his Ph.D. from the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Ehime University, Japan. He is carrying out research to explore novel and indigenous phytomedicinal and functional food sources as alternative therapeutics to deliver in the cellular target. He published one hundred thirty-five articles in peer-reviewed and high-impact journals.

  • Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship as a Ph. D scholar for 2003-2006
  • Debate Championship awards in inter-hall debate competition at the University of Dhaka (1998)
  • Best presenter award (1st runner up) in the 4th National Conference of Natural Science and Technology held at the Asian University of Women on 24-25 March 2017.
  • Best invited speaker award in International Conference on Interdisciplinary Interaction on Non-communicable Diseases (NCD-2017), Annamali University, Tamil Nadu, India, 22-24 Sep, 2017.
  • Biosafety Awards 2017. Achieved Best Biosafety Officer award by Bangladesh Biosafety and Biosecurity Association and Biosafety Office, ICDDR, B.
  • Travel Award US Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and the Academy of Science Malaysia jointly offered a Travel award to join the Regional Conference to promote Safe and Secure Science in the Middle East, South, and South Asia, 5-9 February 2018, in Sunway University, Malaysia.
  • AASSA President’s Young Scientist Award 2018, issued by Bangladesh Academy of Science, on 14-15 September 2018.

  • Postdoctoral fellowship from the Department of Biochemistry, School of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology, University of KwaZulu Natal (July 2011-June 2012), Durban.
  • PhD in Applied Bioresource Science (2003-2006) from the United Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Ehime University, Japan. Worked on “Stereochemistry and biosynthesis of (+)-lyoniresinol and related syringyl lignans in Lyonia ovalifolia var. elliptica” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Takeshi Katayama at Kagawa University, Japan.
  • Master of Science in Biochemistry (1997-1998) from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Secured first class. Worked on”phytochemical and biological studies on Litsea glutinosa” as an indispensable part of MSc degree under the supervision of Prof. Dr Enamul Haque.
  • Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry (1993-1996) from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Secured first class.

  • Worked as a research associate in the Centre for Biomedical research (Jan-Jul 2000).
  • Worked as a product executive in the IBN SINA pharmaceutical industries Ltd (5 Aug 2000-18 Aug 2001).
  • Worked as a product officer in the ACME Laboratories Ltd (19 Aug 2001-30 Sep 2003)
  • Worked as a research assistant in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Kagawa, Japan (2003-2005)
  • Worked as a research associate in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Kagawa, Japan (2003-2004, 2005-2006)
  • Worked as a lecturer in the Dept of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh (Nov 2004 to August 2008)
